It was almost three oâclock by the time I pulled up to the fire station in Wesley. Maybe the firefighters who had put out the blaze in the red car would know who she was and where she lived. With another bit of luck, I might even get to see the hot guy Stan Jones who had hit on Libby so many times.
I got out of the car and wandered over to the open garage door in the brick two-story building. Inside, polishing the chrome of an enormous fire truck, a guy in his mid-forties looked over at me. He straightened, holding the blue rag in both of his hands, peering with ice-blue eyes that I swear felt like he could see right through me.
If this was Stan Jones, I could only wonder at Libbyâs sanity that sheâd never gone out with him. With shoulders like a linebacker and ripped arm muscles below a face that was ruggedly handsome, he could be a model for a calendar. If they sold any with this guy featured, I would buy a dozen!
âCan I help you?â Even his voice was smooth as golden honey.
âMaybe.â I strode forward, extending my hand. âIâm Shannon Burke. I just moved into my auntâs old place on Lakeshore Lane.â
He smiled and his grip was warm and firm. âPleased to meet you. Iâm Lester Holmes.â
This isnâtthe hot Stan guy? What the hell was with this town? I hid the disappointment that this wasnât Libbyâs guy and continued. âIâm trying to locate the woman who owned the red car that caught fire a few days ago. I saw the whole thing as I drove by on my way home. I felt sorry and baked some brownies to take to her, but I donât know her name or address. I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction.â
His eyebrows rose high and he scratched his head. âIâm not sureââ
âAny problems here, Lester?â The guy who emerged from the darkness of the garage was even hotter than Lester, if that were possible.
There was definitely something in the water in Wesley to create such perfect male specimens. His hair was dark with a few streaks of gray near his temples, and there was something about his eyes. They seemed to laugh even though his face was deadpan, although totally gorgeous. He was taller than the first guy and more muscular, stretching out the arms of his T-shirt.
Lester turned and introduced me. âThis is the chief, Stan Jones, Ms. Burke. She was asking about Ida Watkins. She saw the car on fire and wanted to take her brownies.â
Stan shook my hand and my mind went blank! I even found it hard to speak. Libby had to be made of stone not to fall under this guyâs spell. âYes. Can you give me her address?â At least I had her name now, thanks to Lester.
His mouth pulled to the side and he shook his head. âTechnically, I canât do that. Privacy and all that good stuff, yâknow.
